WGA Strike
I’m on strike…dang-it! As a Writers Guild of America (West) member, I am now officially on strike. That means, among other things, that I can’t sell screenplays just now. It also means that the development of Demonkeeper at 20th Century Fox is on hold. BOO! It’s all for a good cause, though, because writers who create the stories we see on screen already receive a ridiculously small percentage of the profit. In other words, the corporations get rich, and the very people who create the material get the crumbs. Now that the internet is emerging as a market, the corporations are proposing that writers get little or nothing there either. BOO! That’s simplistic, but you get the idea. Support writers!
Fortunately, the strike does not apply to my novels. I can still write for Penguin.
Goblins are Coming…!
My next book, tentatively titled GOBLINS, has been tentatively slated for release in the fall of ‘08. Thus, I am tentatively letting you know that you can tentatively get excited about seeing GOBLINS early in the next school year!
I’ll be Speaking at the SCBWI Conference April 26-27
I am officially a speaker for the Western Washington Conference in Seattle. I will be speaking on the opening success stories panel before a conference-wide audience on day one and doing a solo hour-long breakout session on day two. My session will focus on selling stories in Hollywood and how books are translated into movies. My Portland friends, Laini Taylor and Jim DiBartolo, will also be speaking at the conference. Very fun!
I previously spoke at the Pacific Northwest Writers Association Summer Conference. I did a panel discussion on screenwriting and a breakout session with my manager from Atchity Entertainment International (AEI), Ken Atchity. Ken was also a keynote speaker. It went well and felt great!
www.incwell.com is Planning to Publish my Short Fiction
Incwell’s online fiction site, Ipulp, has offered to publish a short story by me. Very cool. I am working with editor Keith Shaw at Ipulp to bring you something special. Did I mention the site was free? Well…it is. Ain’t that great? You will be able to read my stuff there without charge.
Quickie Review - Into the Wild
Recommended. Good movie. The examination of the life and death of a young man who rejects modern society in favor of a life of “tramping” and, eventually, camping…in the wild. Beautifully done, and though the protagonist is portrayed as having an annoying amount of contempt for parents that provided him everything in life, his free spirit attitude is made charming overall. Unfortunately, it leads him, unprepared, into the wild and into a tragic death (not a spoiler…it’s the premise of the movie). Well done, with only the small flaw of being a bit preachy in the voice-over.
